The User Support & Employment Service acknowledges that people with mental health problems often experience difficulty finding, getting and maintaining the right employment for them. People often feel that many job opportunities exclude them because of negative attitudes and perceptions about the nature of mental health difficulties by others. The chances of securing and maintaining employment can be improved if the right support is available. Workplaces and services can be enhanced when people who are ‘experts by experience’ work with them.
What we do is:-
• Provide an employment/training information service to service users and mental health workers.
• Run regular Workshops which explore employment issues and the options available in Sheffield. These are run regularly by service user volunteers and paid workers.
• Provide support and advice through the decision making, application, interview and selection processes.
• Identify job opportunities and posts within health and social care and related services
• Provide ongoing support on an individually tailored basis (for example practical help/advice, telephone support, monitoring of how work is progressing).
• Drop ins every other Wednesday, appointments can be made through access or by ringing the team.

Voluntary work can be a rewarding experience which can help people to regain confidence and develop skills in a work environment.
Volunteering can be a useful stepping stone for people who are thinking about returning to paid work, considering a change in employment direction or who may be seeking a career in health and social care. All volunteers are supported by going through a normal application process and receive supervision in their work placement.
What does the User Volunteer Service offer?
• We make every effort to match placements to the interests or ambitions of each volunteer.
• Access to the Trust’s training and development opportunities.
